This Backfill project was a remodel and addition to the first floor, (remodeled area is approximately 70,000 square feet and the addition is approximately 12,000 square feet). The first floor remodel and addition houses a new Central Evaluation Unit (CEU), Emergency Department (ED), Walk-in Clinic (WIC), Pediatric Urgent Care Center (PUCC), and new spaces for the existing Radiology Department. 

The schematic design for this backfill project was done at the same time as the schematic design of the cafeteria project, in part, because the electric service upgrades were designed to accommodate the backfill, cafeteria and future needs. The power distribution design for the backfill project implemented and expanded the design concepts developed during design of the cafeteria project.

Like the cafeteria project, we provided the highest level of survey work of existing conditions by detailing down to the individual circuit level. This was necessary due to the complexity of the project and the phase approach to construction. The owner accelerated the construction time frame beyond what was originally an aggressive time frame. One of the techniques utilized to facilitate this acceleration was the assembly of a task force whose role was to carefully coordinate the 3D shop drawings of all the MEP systems in order to resolve 99% of the potential construction conflicts prior to construction and allow easier construction in an operating Emergency Department. This project was constructed in 3 phases over a three year time period. The hospital and all departments maintained services during the entire construction period.

We were responsible for design of the lighting and power systems, including the power distribution system design and branch circuit power design. We were also responsible for managing the design of the fire alarm system.
